Family Law

Family matters are personal, emotional, and high stakes. I provide calm, practical legal support through divorce, custody, maintenance, and common-law property disputes.

Family law matters touch the most personal parts of your life. Whether you are going through a divorce, fighting for custody of your children, or trying to sort out property after a relationship breakdown, you need a lawyer who listens, understands, and acts in your best interest.

I handle family law with the same straightforward approach I bring to all my work - clear advice, honest assessment, and practical solutions. I am not interested in escalating conflict. My goal is to help you reach the best possible outcome for you and your family, as efficiently as possible.

In Trinidad and Tobago, family law covers marriage, divorce, custody, maintenance, domestic violence protection, and common-law property rights. I help clients navigate all of these areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

To file for divorce, you must have been married for at least one year. The sole ground for divorce is irretrievable breakdown of the marriage, which can be established by adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion for at least two years, or separation (two years with consent, five years without). A petition is filed in the Family Court, and I handle the entire process for you.
Under the Cohabitational Relationships Act, common-law partners who have lived together for at least five years may have property rights similar to married couples. The court can make orders for property distribution and maintenance upon the breakdown of a cohabitational relationship. This is an evolving area of law in Trinidad, and I can advise you on your specific rights.
The court decides custody based on the best interests of the child. Factors include the child age, the relationship with each parent, the ability of each parent to provide a stable home, and the child own wishes (if old enough). Joint custody is possible and increasingly common. I help you present the strongest case for the arrangement you are seeking.
Yes. Under the Domestic Violence Act, you can apply to the Family Court for a protection order if you or your children are experiencing domestic violence - including physical, emotional, or financial abuse. I can help you file an urgent application and ensure your safety is protected.
There is no fixed formula for maintenance in Trinidad. The court considers factors including each party income, their needs, the standard of living during the marriage, and the needs of any children. I can help you understand what a reasonable maintenance amount might be in your case and present a strong application to the court.
